In Highland and Munster, a new pathway – known as the “Bridges Over Ditches” project – is the first direct pathway connection between the two towns. Residents and visitors are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting Monday, June 15, 2026 at 1:30 P.M. The event will take place on the peninsula between the pathway’s two new pedestrian bridges. Attendees are encouraged to walk or bike to the ceremony. Limited parking will be available along Brantwood Park on Lincoln Street in Highland.
The Highland Munster Pathway represents the completion of a long-envisioned regional trail connection. The project’s origins date back to 2008, when funding was first secured through Transportation Enhancement grants administered by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in partnership with the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC). Construction began following a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2025.
The new pathway extends the Fisher Street Trail, which begins at the Pennsy Greenway near the Illinois-Indiana state line and travels east, featuring two new pedestrian bridges crossing Hart Ditch and Cady Marsh Ditch, creating a direct connection between the Fisher Street Trail and Highland’s Brantwood Park. A newly paved trail segment also extends south from the bridge area to Martha Street, improving neighborhood access for residents in both Highland and Munster.
