In Munster, the town will host the American Discovery 250 Relay marking its entry into the Hoosier state. The cross-country relay is traveling more than 6,800 miles from the Pacific to Atlantic coast, and the Town of Munster is inviting the public to join local officials on the Pennsy Greenway at the Illinois/Indiana State Line at about 10:30AM Wednesday October 14, 2026, as the baton crosses the state line from northeast Illinois into northwest Indiana. Lansing Mayor Hardy will pass the relay baton to Munster officials, who will take turns carrying it through the community before it’s passed to members of the School Town of Munster cross country teams. Participants are completing the journey by foot, bicycle, and kayak while carrying a special baton containing a copy of the Declaration of Independence. The event celebrating America’s 250th birthday is also meant to bring communities together along the nation’s first coast-to-coast, non-motorized trail. The town of Munster added the relay will travel nearly 100 miles on Wednesday October 14 2026 from Lansing, Illinois, to North Judson, Indiana, with a detour along the Indiana Dunes.
