The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County reminds residents of the vital importance of safely disposing of medical sharps, noting that proper disposal not only protects sanitation workers and the public from potential harm but also prevents environmental contamination. Common medical sharps include needles used for injections, syringes, lancets, auto-injectors, infusion sets, and GLP-1 injectors, the district said.
Porter County residents who have any of these at home are advised to collect them in an enclosed hard container, like an old laundry jug for example, and bring them to either the Porter County Health Department on Indiana Avenue in downtown Valparaiso or the Portage Health Department on Willowcreek Road. Both locations are available to accept these items from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM; the Portage office is closed for lunch from 12:30PM-1:30PM M-F.
“Sharps are also accepted at every Household Hazardous Waste Collection hosted by the Recycling District of Porter County,” the news release said. For more information on medical sharps disposal, contact the Recycling and Waste Reduction District at (219) 465-3694 or the Porter County Health Department at (219) 465-3525.
