The National Weather Service Chicago says one of several tornadoes that impacted its forecast area earlier this month touched down near Lowell in northwest Indiana. On April 17, 2026, meteorologists say the Lowell tornado, rated EF-0, formed just before 10:30 pm just west of the state line, went through the northwest side of Lowell as it tracked northeast for about ten miles toward Lake Dalecarlia before dissipating likely before reaching State Road 55. The National Weather Service says that same night an EF-1 tornado impacted the Kentland area in northwest Indiana, and an EF-2 tornado impacted rural areas of eastern Iroquois County, Illinois, and southwestern Newton County. No injuries were reported. Here is a link to the National Weather Service Chicago website for more details on severe weather that occurred April 17, 2026.
